oops... and here's a monster
Well, I tried. I did work on that pattern, but trying is not the same as actually finishing, so it will be next Friday before that Cowgirl etc. vest pattern is posted. I apologize if any of you were hoping to knock it out over the weekend as a birthday gift (ha ha).
But there's always a new sock monster to peek at instead. This is the Obamonster that Tracey won in the T-shirt making contest:
in the unlikely story that is sockmonsters, there has never been anything false about hope
I can post a picture because I finally mailed it off to Tracey last week. This little monster loves democracy, voting and community organizing, and her/his favorite singer is will.i.am. S/he enjoyed hanging out with the other monsters at my house, organizing anti-war rallies with them and preparing meals for the local women's shelter. I'm sure s/he will find plenty to do at Tracey's house, too, though I hear that s/he is planning on volunteering in battleground states this fall. Maybe you'll run into her/him at a rally in your town!
If you were a contest winner and you still haven't received your prize, it's because I'm having a little logistical challenge related to un-shippable items... but I promise I'll figure it out soon (sorry Angela, and thanks for being patient!).
Off to enjoy vegetating indoors for the rest of this sweltering Sunday. It seems that summer has finally arrived here in North Carolina. *sigh* I was really hooked on spring.

and the winners are...
We may not have a Democratic presidential nominee yet, but we sure do have some T-shirt rally winners! Many thanks to our celebrity guest craftista judges, the Handmaidens, for discerning the creme de la creme among some dazzling DIY Obama T-shirts.
Judging was based on creativity, skill, wearability and recycling/reusing. Once the results were tabulated, our winners emerged:
Grand Champion: Angela, of Purls Before Wine
Angela used a stencil she designed, and finished the project with hand-stitching. Check out a detail here.
Junior Grand Champion: Tracey, of Itching 2B Stitching
Tracey's entry was high on recycling, with a repurposed shirt, re-used letters and the states Obama has won cut out of USA fabric and appliquéd on the back. Here's a shot of the front as well.
Runner-up: Nicole, a.k.a. PeaceNic
Nicole rocks the recycling (as always), with a totally repurposed and reconstructed shirt. Gotta love the re-use of an old GOTV shirt. Another view here.

Les's beautiful dove design on a photo emulsion screen. You can also see a sleeved version here.
Unlike the presidential race, in this contest we have several winners and they all get a prize. Many thanks to those who donated prizes, including Lomester, Les, and Ileana (who was also a celebrity Handmaiden judge). Thanks to all you crafters who made shirts, entered, didn't enter, cheerleaded, posted pics of your other amazing Obama crafts, and generally made this T-shirt Making Rally a blast! The Crafters for Obama group will stay open throughout election season, so please join in and share some pics of your hope-fueled crafting.

6 days and counting...
Oh, did you think I meant til the big May 6th primary?? I guess I meant that too... But there are just 6 days left until someone wins THIS:

This is a beautiful cooler bearing Les's delicious Obamabrew, a hand-crafted Belgian style golden ale that will be presented (in six-pack format) to one lucky winner of the Crafters for Obama T-shirt rally!
I sampled some of the golden goodness on Sunday, and people let me tell you, if you like beer, you want to win this contest.
The other night at PeaceNic & Les's house, we got down to some local crafting for Obama while raising a little money for the campaign. We ate a lot of soy-based fake meat product, chased toddlers around in the rain, and then a bunch of folks put some stencils and a Bedazzler to work & made themselves some T-shirts. It was my first time out modeling my sparkly, sparkly new Obama T-shirt:
don't be blinded by the hope
You know I'm going to be wearing this shirt every chance I get! I used an old rock & roll T-shirt, bedazzled the outer ring & inner stripes and then hand-sequined the inside. I won't say how many hours it took... all I can say is that I'm really glad that I like the final product better than the original Erase Errata T-shirt I had to mangle to make it. Three cheers for sequins!
The sock monster is almost done, the other prizes are piling up, the T-shirt models are flexing their chest muscles, and the t-shirts are making their way to the Flickr group! And by the way, check out the other incredible crafts on the Flickr group while you're there... y'all amaze me.

The Crafters for Obama T-shirt Making Rally is underway! I've updated the official page for the rally, but thought I'd let you know that...
sign-ups are still open!
I mean, why not? The more the merrier, right? The current list of participants is on the main page, and I am LOVING everyone's posts to the Flickr group. Go check out the Obama craftiness & join the group! It is a lovely sight to behold.
We've also added some new prizes for rally winners. Ileana is donating a prize from India*Romeo, and Lomester has donated an adorable cuddly Democrat! More prizes will be added before the Rally closes & winners are announced on May 6th.
I need to go get back to work on my T-shirt. Sewing sequins takes longer than I thought it would.

crafty time
Thanks to all of you who have signed up for the Obama T-shirt making rally! There's still plenty of time to sign up if you want to get in on the crafty action and win some prizes!

You can also join the Crafters4Obama Flickr group without doing the T-shirt rally, and share whatever you're making. There are already some amazing campaign-inspired crafts in the photo pool. I'm in love with this and this. And check out this beautiful "Key to Change" bag from Stitch Poet. *swoon!* Kate's right -- I think all these things will be historical folk art one day in the not-too-distant future.
On Saturday we had a crafty day at our house. Kate and Ileana came over. Ileana was making subversive cross-stitch, and Kate was making her rad Obama T-shirt. She also started an embroidery project which is going to be incredible. I won't spoil any surprises, though. All in all, it was a lovely afternoon of fun with two very creative ladies, capped off later with greasy Mexican food. yum.
I made another recycled plastic bag. This one's a prize for someone who not only needs a Pay it Forward gift, but is also a rabid Obama fan:
carry your groceries with HOPE in 08
Here's what I learned about using the iron to fuse plastic bags: Thicker, department store-type bags lay nice and flat and keep their shape fairly well when you fuse them together. Flimsy grocery bags fuse well too, and make a nice strong finished product, but they shrink unpredictably and you wind up with a weird, warped funky shape when you're done fusing. So I'm not going to use them again (if I ever get the urge to fuse plastic bags again, which honestly may not happen, at least not for a long time). Although I really like the finished product, I dislike plastic too inherently to really enjoy these projects all that much.
On Saturday I also started a T-shirt, but bedazzling and sequins are rather time-consuming, so I think it will be a little while before it's done and I can share a picture. I'm very excited about it, though. It's going to be the blingiest thing I own for sure, except for the name-necklace my parents gave me for 8th grade graduation, which I have never worn and for which my mom still chides me occasionally ("I don't understand why you won't wear that beautiful necklace," etc). I just can't bring myself to wear it, even ironically.
And one last thing: I must say about the Bedazzler, it's a pain in the a$$, but I LOVE IT. There are many more sparkly crafts in my near future. Can you imagine blingy sock monsters???? I sure can. Maybe I should start making sparkly name-necklaces for the sock monsters? Hm... something to ponder.

obama t-shirt making rally!

i can't tell you how much fun this logo was to make. i [heart] elmer's glue!
I know y'all love to make stuff for yourselves, as I do, so I thought it might be fun to have a little challenge. Who wants to get on board with an Obama t-shirt making rally??? This is a chance to get creative, get recycling, and to show your support for Barack Obama in 2008!
Want to do it? I know you do! And I really want to see everyone's amazing designs!
RALLY RULES:
- Entry fee: Make a donation in any amount to the Obama campaign (this is optional, but strongly encouraged because hey, we're trying to get this guy elected, right?)
- Sign up for the Crafters4Obama group
- Make your own Obama T-shirt.
- Thrifted, hand-made or repurposed T-shirts only -- no buying anything new for this challenge.
- Make your own design.
- Hand-decorate your own shirt, using whatever craft medium suits you, from screenprinting to crochet to bedazzling to embroidery.
- Rally winners will be announced on May 6 (the North Carolina & Indiana primaries).
